WA Government backs wind for energy security

The Smart Energy Council (SEC) has welcomed the Western Australian Government’s announcement of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) by Synergy with Neoen, for the Narrogin Wind Farm, in addition to those announced on March 22.

With the 4 new renewable energy PPA’s now announced delivering over 1.3 gigawatt of capacity, WA State Manager John Welch said it’s further positive news that work has already begun on this wind farm.

“This is another strong step towards a more reliable energy system,” he said.

“It’s pleasing that work has begun on the new Narrogin Wind Farm. “

Mr Welch said the announcement showed renewables are stepping up to power the state and strengthen energy security.

“This is a significant commitment and a further strong signal that investment in Western Australia’s energy system is moving in the right direction,” he said.

“At a time of enormous global energy uncertainty, it’s critical to invest in infrastructure that isn’t exposed to volatile energy prices or supply shocks. These projects produce energy generated here, not on the other side of the world.”

“Wind and solar have no ongoing costs and remain free regardless of global instability.“

The SEC said the announcement reflected a broader shift towards a more reliable and resilient energy mix, based on renewable energy, and called for greater momentum on deployment.

“This is an important step. We need to continue building a strong pipeline of renewable projects to increase support for a stable, resilient energy future for Western Australia,” Mr Welch said.
