smart transport
With the right policy settings, we can almost eliminate transport emissions, and create employment opportunities and an equitable transport system.
Initiatives and Achievements
- Progressing strong and ambitious Fuel Efficiency Standards.
- Holding Australia’s inaugural National EV summit, in collaboration with the Australia Institute, Boundless and the Electric Vehicle Council.
- Calling for leadership and a national fuel security strategy at our Emergency Fuel Security summit.
- Bringing together industry experts at our Batteries on Wheels conference to unpack the barriers and opportunities of integrating EVs into the grid.
- Providing regular industry updates, networking opportunities and a forum to inform our transport advocacy, through our Smart Transport working group.
efficiency standards
The Smart Energy Council strongly supports the New Vehicle Efficiency Standards, which will deliver $1000 in fuel savings per new vehicle by 2028.
The Smart Energy Council is advocating for ambitious standards, legislated urgently.
“Australians are paying far too much for petrol, having been forced to drive much less efficient cars than any other developed country. This must, and will, change,” said Smart Energy Council Chief Executive John Grimes.
Current Campaigns
- National EV strategy including strong national Fuel Efficiency Standards with clear targets for all vehicle categories. The rapid uptake of EVs and their coordinated connection to the grid and more.
- Introduction of Fuel Efficiency Standards -strong and ambitious, without loopholes, and based on publicly accessible emissions data.
2022
- Held Australia’s first National EV summit in August 2022, in collaboration with the Australia Institute, Boundless and the Electric Vehicle Association.
- Held Emergency Fuel Security Summit bringing together experts from defense, the vehicle and renewables industry, think-tanks and politicians to call for leadership and a national fuel security strategy.
- At the Batteries on Wheels conference industry experts discussed the integration of EVs into the grid, including managed charging of EVs and opportunities for bidirectional energy flow.
