Smart Energy Council welcomes C&I solar rebates in Victoria

C&I solar rebates in Victoria

The Smart Energy Council congratulates the Victorian Government on its announcement today of discounted rooftop solar systems through a new Commercial and Industrial (C&I) Solar activity under the Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program.

Solar systems between 30 and 200 kilowatts will be eligible to get a discount through the VEU, in addition to any other rebates they may be eligible for such as STCs or LGCs.

Australian businesses are the future power stations of Australia,” Smart Energy Council Chief Strategy Officer Nigel Morris said.

Businesses face escalating energy costs across the board, particularly from gas. Solar and storage are not just nice to have, they’re a must-have.”

The Victorian Government VEU program significantly reduces payback periods, makes networks smarter and more robust, and this new C&I discount will be a vital stimulus for the commercial rooftop sector.

The Smart Energy Council strongly supports the inclusion of schools, hospitals, aged care facilities and other community assets being eligible for the discount of up to $35,000 on a solar installation, which will help slash energy costs permanently, and make our grid cleaner and more reliable.

The VEU program already offers solar upgrades under the project-based activities method, but the new deemed activity dramatically simplifies the process, offering upfront discounts and shorter project timelines which makes solar more commercially attractive.

This will be a shot in the arm to the commercial rooftop sector which has been a focus area of the Smart Energy Council, and we commend the Government’s foresight.”

In conjunction with existing programs our industry can now accelerate its work helping businesses to save and grow,” Mr Morris said.

The Smart Energy Council calls on other jurisdictions to take note of Solar Victoria’s commitment to helping businesses lower input costs through solar, and other smart energy applications.
