Future laid for a Future Made in Australia

The Smart Energy Council and Zero Carbon Hydrogen Australia welcome the passage of the Production Tax Credit bill, a major victory for Australia’s smart energy and critical minerals future.

Today’s milestone is the result of tireless advocacy by the Smart Energy Council, Zero Carbon Hydrogen Australia, unions, industry leaders, and climate organisations working to lock in the nation’s future economic, employment and energy security.

Production tax credits help close the price gap between established overseas producers and fossil fuel-based operations transitioning to clean, onshore manufacturing. These incentives form the financial backbone of the Future Made in Australia package, providing the certainty needed to fund critical clean technology and green energy projects.

“Production Tax Credits cement the foundations of Australia’s future prosperity, supporting renewable hydrogen, smart energy manufacturing, critical minerals value-adding, and green metals industries,” Smart Energy Council Chief Executive John Grimes said.

“This is how to ensure a Future is Made in Australia.”

“Australia has the resources, expertise, and ambition to lead in hydrogen, but we need policy certainty to stay competitive. Production Tax Credits are a proven tool to drive investment, lower costs, and accelerate industry growth – ensuring hydrogen strengthens our energy security, economy, and global position,” Zero Carbon Hydrogen Australia Executive General Manager Joanna Kay said.

The Smart Energy Council and Zero Carbon Hydrogen Australia fully supports the passing of this legislation as it paves the way for domestic value-adding in the clean energy and critical minerals sectors, and ensures long-term job creation in Australia’s energy workforce, manufacturing, and mining industries – sectors vital to rural and regional economies.

“Australia wins when we build more onshore, create secure jobs, and extract greater value from our resources,” Mr Grimes said.

“This sends a strong signal to investors that Australia is serious about becoming a world leader in clean mineral production.”

“By delivering targeted incentives, the tax credits will attract the capital needed to scale new industries and secure Australia’s position in the global clean energy transition.”

The Smart Energy Council and Zero Carbon Hydrogen Australia congratulate all MPs and Senators who supported the Production Tax Credits Bill for laying the foundations for Australia to be a Renewables and Critical Minerals Superpower.
