Climate risks must accelerate renewable energy solutions

Together, the National Climate Risk Assessment Report and National Climate Adaptation Plan confirm what we have all known and feared – dangerous climate change is already here.

Smart Energy Council Chief Executive John Grimes congratulates the Albanese Government for the release of these important investigations, that reveal the present and future costs of inaction on climate.

“The Smart Energy Council and its members have long been at the forefront of helping Australia, and the rest of the world, to decarbonise its energy systems to combat the worst excesses that fossil fuel is unleashing on our planet,” Mr Grimes said.

“Today, we announce a redoubling of our efforts to speed up the shift from a dirty to clean economy, and urge others to do the same.

“We have to work harder to meet the goals we have set ourselves to stop dangerous climate change from increasing threats to all of us.

“That means rapidly rolling out renewable energy and putting an end to new coal and gas projects, including extensions of existing mines.

“Every one of us has a role to play. If we act now, we can minimise the risks identified in this report and build a safer, more secure future.”

The Smart Energy Council reaffirms its calls for the federal government to be ambitious in setting its pending 2035 emission reduction target.

“It’s clear the time for talk has passed, the time for action on slashing carbon and methane gas is now,” Mr Grimes said.

“One of the best and most rapidly deployable methods of doing that, is through renewable energy, and along with our members we stand ready to make that happen.”
