Too slow, too expensive – Nuclear fantasy meets reality

The Smart Energy Council notes the interim report for the inquiry into nuclear power generation in Australia has confirmed what energy realists already knew, which is that nuclear power is too slow and too expensive for Australia.

Nuclear reactors will not deliver any power to Australia until well into the 2040’s, and would be the most expensive form of energy generation in the country, Smart Energy Council Chief Executive John Grimes says.

“After a decade of doing precisely nothing to solve our pressing need for more affordable, reliable and less polluting energy sources, this report confirms the Liberal and National parties are proposing we wait another 20 years,” Smart Energy Council Chief Executive John Grimes said.

“Nuclear reactors will more than double the power bills in the solar homes of four million Australians.”

“In the middle of the cost of living crisis, the federal opposition wants to add $1100 to the average solar power power bill.”

“Energy bills for more than 10 million Australians will double under Dutton.”

The Smart Energy Council also notes the Climate Change Authority’s findings that Mr Dutton’s nuclear fantasy would release two billion more tonnes of carbon – consistent with global warming of 2.6 degrees globally.

“The Liberal and National parties not only want to cap renewable energy at 54 per cent – a target we’ll achieve by next year – they want to cook your bills and the planet,” Mr Grimes said.

“It’s devastatingly clear that Peter Dutton’s nuclear fantasy is in reality a Coalkeeper and Gasguzzler plan.”
