Smart Energy Council thanks Barbara Elliston for two decades of board service

The Smart Energy Council would like to thank Barbara Elliston for her close to 20 years of service on its Board, following her recent decision to step down as a board member.

Throughout her time on the Board, Barbara worked closely with fellow directors, senior executive leaders and stakeholders across the clean energy sector, contributing extensive technical, commercial and governance experience to the organisation’s direction and advocacy.

Smart Energy Council Chief Executive Officer David McElrea thanked Barbara for her longstanding commitment to the Council and the industry.

“Barbara has made an extraordinary contribution to the Smart Energy Council over close to two decades,” Mr McElrea said.

“Her technical expertise, considered leadership and deep understanding of electricity systems have been invaluable to the Board and to the Council’s work.

“Barbara has generously shared her knowledge and experience while consistently supporting practical innovation and the continued development of the smart energy sector.

“On behalf of the Smart Energy Council, our Board, members and staff, I thank Barbara for her dedicated service and wish her every success in the next chapter.”

A qualified electrical engineer based in New Zealand, Barbara has more than 40 years of experience across electricity generation, transmission and distribution, power purchasing, corporate governance, strategic development and renewable energy innovation.

She is a director of Elliston Power Consultants, Unison Networks and Easy Warm. Her previous senior leadership roles include directorships with Genesis Energy and Transpower, as well as power management experience with Comalco NZ.

Barbara is also commercialising Hot PV™, a solar hot water technology that uses electricity generated by solar photovoltaic panels directly for water heating. The technology is designed to reduce pressure on electricity networks and provide a practical energy solution for remote locations.

She also serves on the Electricity Authority’s Common Quality Technical Group, contributing to work on changes to New Zealand’s electricity codes to accommodate inverter-based resources and remove barriers to their integration into the electricity system.

Barbara’s contribution to the sector was further recognised this year through her induction into the Hall of Fame at the Smart Energy Excellence Awards.

The Smart Energy Council congratulates Barbara on her Hall of Fame recognition, thanks her for close to 20 years of Board service and wishes her well for the future.
