Smart Energy Council Signs MoU to Advance Australia–Bangladesh Renewable Energy Partnership

The Smart Energy Council has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bangladesh Sustainable and Renewable Energy Association (BSREA), marking an important step in accelerating Bangladesh’s renewable energy transition and strengthening regional collaboration across the Asia-Pacific.

The signing ceremony was hosted virtually by the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) and witnessed by Australian High Commissioner Susan Ryle and Bangladesh High Commissioner to Australia, F. M. Borhan Uddin. The MoU was signed by Mr Mostafa Al Mahmud, President of BSREA, and Mr John Grimes, CEO of the Smart Energy Council.

Building Capacity and Driving Collaboration

The partnership will focus on five key areas to advance Bangladesh’s renewable energy sector and foster stronger bilateral cooperation:

Solar training and installer certification aligned with international standards
– Technical guidance on national safety and certification systems
– Circular economy solutions for end-of-life solar and battery systems
– Renewable energy project deployment and stakeholder engagement
– Knowledge exchange and regional collaboration across the Asia-Pacific

Regional Engagement and Shared Commitment

The virtual signing was hosted by Trade & Investment Commissioner Ben Carson, with participation from senior officials from Bangladesh’s Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR) and the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA), alongside representatives from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and Austrade, including Abu Ali Sarker, Director of the Green Economy sector at the Australian High Commission in Dhaka.

Speaking at the signing, John Grimes, CEO of the Smart Energy Council, said: “This partnership is about more than energy – it’s about skills, standards, and building the foundations of a smart energy future. Together with BSREA, we can accelerate Bangladesh’s transition while fostering stronger regional ties.”

Towards a Sustainable Future

The MoU represents a significant milestone in strengthening Australia–Bangladesh relations in renewable energy, underlining a shared commitment to advancing sustainability, energy security, and economic opportunities in the region.
