The Smart Energy Council congratulates the Federal Government and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) for taking a major step towards unlocking Australia’s green hydrogen industry.
The first funding allocation of $814 million from the Hydrogen Headstart Program to Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) 1,500 MW Murchison Green Hydrogen Project in Western Australia is a serious demonstration that industry and government are determined to build a decarbonised metals and critical minerals industry.
“Announcing this project in WA makes so much sense,” Smart Energy Council acting Chief Executive Wayne Smith said.
“A Future Made in Australia is a future made in WA. Our economic future sees Australia building decarbonised products like green iron and aluminium, turbocharging Australia’s economy, workforce, and energy security now and into the future.”
“A critical ingredient needed to make Australia a renewable energy and critical mineral superpower is green hydrogen.”
“This will unlock more of the country’s world-class hydrogen potential and pave the way for new, large-scale clean energy exports.”
The Smart Energy Council’s WA General Manager, Charlie Caruso, says the 2024 National Hydrogen Strategy is a clear roadmap for decarbonising both existing and emerging industries, from green metals and chemicals to industrial applications.
“Hydrogen Headstart and renewable hydrogen Production Tax Credits are fundamental parts of A Future Made in Australia. They are the building blocks for making things in Australia and helping decarbonise countries throughout the region.”
“By harnessing Australia’s abundant renewable energy resources, it positions the country as a major player in the global smart energy market, driving economic growth and enhancing its reputation as a stable and trusted trading partner.”
The Smart Energy Council looks forward to the next funding allocation from the $2 billion Hydrogen Headstart Program.
