Amber Electric and BYD Australia have announced the expansion of their vehicle-to-grid (V2G) partnership to include the Sealion 7, enabling eligible owners of the model to participate in Amber’s residential V2G program.
Backed by $13.6 million in funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), Amber’s V2G program is scaling to 1,000 households. The program enables participating customers to use their EVs as “batteries on wheels” to help power their homes, manage energy costs and potentially earn credits by exporting electricity to the grid.
Amber reports that more than 50 V2G sites are currently operating through the program, with more than 8,000 people on its waitlist.
EV sales in Australia have continued to grow this year. In August, battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids and hybrids collectively accounted for more than 50 per cent of total vehicle sales for the first time, while BEVs represented 25.6 per cent of sales.
The announcement builds on BYD’s existing involvement in the program through its Atto 3 model. Adding the Sealion 7 will allow more eligible BYD customers to explore how V2G technology could help them use their vehicle as part of their household energy system.
Since launching in Australia in February 2025, the Sealion 7 has become BYD’s top-selling EV in the Australian market, with the company reporting more than 30,000 customers to date. The vehicle uses BYD’s Blade Battery technology and includes vehicle-to-load capability as standard, allowing owners to power compatible appliances directly from the vehicle.
As with the Atto 3, BYD has confirmed that the EV batteries of Sealion 7 owners participating in Amber’s program will remain covered under the company’s applicable warranty arrangements.
Eligible Amber V2G participants will also be able to purchase a BYD Atto 3 Evo Dynamic or Premium, or a Sealion 7 Premium or Performance, at a six per cent discount from the base recommended retail price, including GST. Eligibility requirements and other conditions apply.
Clare Rainbow, Head of V2G at Amber Electric, said the inclusion of the Sealion 7 would make the program accessible to a broader group of Australian EV owners.
“We’re the leading residential V2G program in Australia, and having BYD expand its support to the Sealion 7, its best-selling model, is a big deal. It means a much bigger group of Australians can access V2G and start earning money from a car that would otherwise spend most of its time parked. That’s how this technology starts to become mainstream.”

Amber and BYD are showcasing their partnership at Everything Electric, held at Sydney Olympic Park from Friday 18 to Sunday 20 September, at stand C14. Representatives from both companies will be available during the event to provide further information.
