A success story of Jon Edwards – Suburban Australian Workshop Powers EVs with Robust Local Technology

O’Connor, Western Australia – An electric vehicle (EV) charging site in Western Australia is demonstrating the viability and demand for reliable charging infrastructure on key freight and tourist routes. Located at a busy workshop in O’Connor, the site is owned and operated by local business owner Jon Edwards and has become a critical hub for both commercial operators, public users & tourists since its commissioning six months ago.

The site, known as the O’Connor Workshop Charging Hub, is equipped with a state-of-the-art 160kW dual-port DC fast charger, supported by a 35kW on-site solar array. This configuration ensures a significant portion of the energy dispensed to vehicles is renewable, directly harnessing the Australian sun to power transport.

Driving Economic and Environmental Benefits

Over the past six months, the charger’s performance data tells a compelling story of adoption and necessity:

  • Energy Dispensed: Over 48 MWh of energy has been delivered to EVs, with consistent monthly growth culminating in over 10 MWh in December alone.
  • Charge Sessions: More than 1,600 charging sessions have been completed, with monthly sessions growing by over 35% from July to December.
  • User Diversity: The site has served a wide range of users, sessions from public users, commercial fleet vehicles and tourists, underscoring its dual utility.
  • Meeting Commercial Demand: The frequency of commercial vehicles and light trucks utilizing the charger highlights a gap in the market for suitable charging infrastructure for businesses transitioning their fleets & having to rely on public charging to complete the trip.

A Testament to Reliability and Local Innovation

The hub is powered by an eLumina D1 BIEVC. Jon Edwards reports that over the demanding six-month period, the D1 unit has operated with minimal failures, successfully charging every vehicle without issue. Any minor interruptions were related to external site power, or low battery state of charge.

“The reliability has been exceptional,” said Jon Edwards, site owner. “It simply works, day in and day out, for every type of vehicle that pulls in. The support from the team has been first-class, with proactive software updates and service. We’re very happy with the product and its role in keeping WA moving.”

The D1 charger is designed for flexibility, capable of delivering 160kW to a single vehicle or splitting power for simultaneous charging. It is manufactured and tested locally in Australia.
