Connecting WA’s Energy Security

The Smart Energy Council (SEC) congratulates the Cook Government for its $1.4 billion commitment to Western Australia’s grid security, through the establishment of the Clean Energy Fund.

John Welch, SEC General Manager for WA, welcomed the funds initial focus on connecting solar and wind to the south west of the state.

“One of the missing links in the buildout of WA’s energy needs is transmission from new projects, the government is working to fix that,” he said.

“WA has all the ingredients to become a renewable energy superpower, building the infrastructure to connect green power to where it’s needed is a critical first step.”

“This is a clear demonstration that the government is serious about decarbonisation, and its economic opportunities for the state.”

“Using abundant solar and wind to produce billion dollar benefits from green iron and critical minerals will underpin a smart and secure economic future for WA.”

The Smart Energy Council notes that investing in the state’s green energy grid will give confidence to investors that WA wants to bolster its energy needs with reliable renewables.

“This funding is a good downpayment on ensuring that the network is backed up by low cost reliable renewables,” Mr Welch said.

“The Smart Energy Council stands ready to assist the government with ensuring that further ambition is rewarded by industry with investment that guarantees energy security.”
