After almost 18 years as Chief Executive of the Smart Energy Council (SEC), John Grimes will take on a new role as Chief Executive of the Renewable Energy Council Asia Pacific (RECAP), a standalone organisation created by, and a strategic partner to, the Smart Energy Council.
In this new role, John will focus on accelerating the deployment of renewable energy and storage across the Asia Pacific. He will continue to represent SEC members internationally and remain closely engaged with the organisation, providing strategic support to the organisation and the board.
John will remain CEO of the Smart Energy Council until 15th May, (and beyond in a caretaker capacity as needed).
The Smart Energy Council Board will shortly commence the recruitment process for a new Chief Executive to lead the organisation into its next phase of growth and impact. If you are interested in the role – or know someone who may be – you can view the position details here.
The SEC Conference Gala Dinner on 6th of May will serve as a formal farewell, providing members and partners the opportunity to recognise John’s extraordinary contribution to Australia’s renewable energy transition.
A Defining Era of Growth and Influence
Since becoming CEO in 2008, John has led the Smart Energy Council through a period of remarkable growth, resilience and influence. The organisation now represents more than 1,000 corporate members spanning renewable generation, energy storage, electric vehicles, renewable hydrogen and associated technologies.
Under his leadership, the SEC has been central to some of the most consequential energy policy battles and reforms in modern Australia, including:
- Defending the Renewable Energy Target (RET) and protecting ARENA and the CEFC
- Securing landmark reforms including the member-designed Capacity Investment Scheme
- Advocating for and helping deliver the $7.1 billion Cheaper Home Batteries Program
- Driving policy certainty underpinning large-scale renewables and storage investment
John also oversaw the launch of the Zero Carbon Certification Scheme for renewable hydrogen, ammonia and renewable metals; supported the establishment of Solar Accreditation Australia; and led the creation of the Positive Quality manufacturing assurance program.
Today, the Smart Energy Council is in its strongest position in its history – financially secure, rapidly growing membership, and wielding significant national influence as Australia moves from climate conflict to structural reform.
John has also recorded a short video message, which you can watch here.
Statement from John Grimes
“The time is right. The Smart Energy Council has never been more impactful, financially secure or influential than it is today.”
“The major policy foundations are now in place. And while there will always be more to do, Australia has moved from climate wars to structural reform.”
“I have always been motivated by mission and impact. Accelerating the energy transition across the Asia Pacific is essential to securing a sustainable and liveable planet.”
“I now intend to focus my energy on driving renewable deployment across the region at scale.”
“This work will complement my tenure as incoming Chair of the Global Solar Council in 2027 and 2028.”
“I particularly thank our members for their confidence over many years, and acknowledge the extraordinary leadership of Sharon Turner, Steve Blume, Wayne Smith, the SEC Board and our dedicated staff.”
Statement from Prof. Don Henry AM, Chair of the Board
“John Grimes has been one of the most impactful clean energy leaders in Australia’s modern history.”
“For nearly two decades he has led from the front – defending the Renewable Energy Target when it was under threat, helping secure the Capacity Investment Scheme, championing the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, and relentlessly advocating for policy certainty that unlocked billions in private investment.”
“He has grown the Smart Energy Council into the peak independent body for Australia’s smart energy industry and elevated its voice nationally and internationally.”
“His legacy is not simply policy wins – it is an industry that is larger, stronger, more potent and better organised because of his leadership.”
“While John concludes his formal employment, we are pleased he will remain closely linked to the organisation through his leadership of RECAP and though his ongoing support.”
What’s Next
John will eventually be relocating to the Asia Pacific region to lead the Renewable Energy Council Asia Pacific, leveraging his international network to accelerate renewable energy and storage deployment across emerging markets.
