Renewable energy at the heart of 2035 climate goals

The Smart Energy Council welcomes the Albanese Government’s commitment today to a 2035 carbon pollution reduction target of 62% to 70%.

“This is a wide ranging target, however we will be firmly focused on 70 per cent,” Chief Executive John Grimes said.

“In the government’s own words, this must be a floor, and not a ceiling. We continue to believe Australia is well placed to achieve reductions in excess of 70 per cent through investment already underway in renewable energy.”

“This announcement is a signal to businesses both here and abroad that Australia is serious about tackling dangerous climate pollution and securing a safe future for our children and grandchildren.”

“We already have solar on 4 million homes and 10 million Australians already sleep under solar panels every night.”

“Alongside the government’s renewable energy target this decision should see Australia increase investment in the cheapest, cleanest form of power we have.”

The Smart Energy Council notes and welcomes today’s announcement that pollution reduction targets are accompanied by Australia’s Net Zero Plan, and focused funding for the Clean Energy Finance Corporation and National Reconstruction Fund, to increase deployment of EVs, cleaner fuels, and wider electrification of community facilities and hard to abate industry.

Australia’s economic and energy future is now clear, and we re-affirm our call that there can be no new coal and gas approvals in Australia, including extensions to coal mines.

“Beating the 70 per cent floor will help strengthen Australia’s position as a renewable energy superpower – delivering cheaper power prices, more jobs and stronger export opportunities,” Mr Grimes said.

“The rollout of renewable energy will continue to do the heavy lifting towards achieving the government’s new emissions reduction target, with more than 90 per cent of Australia’s national grid now likely to be powered by renewables by 2035.”

“Whilst we would have liked a more ambitious target, the Smart Energy Council will continue working with the federal government, urging greater climate action here in Australia and around the world.”
