Leading ammonia producer Yara joins Zero Carbon Certification Scheme: ARENA-funded Pilbara project to be certified as Renewable Ammonia

The Smart Energy Council and Hydrogen Australia today announced the world-leading ammonia company Yara has become a Founding Partner in its Zero Carbon Certification Scheme.

Yara’s ARENA-funded green ammonia project, a cooperation with Engie on the hydrogen side, will be the second pilot project to be certified under the Zero Carbon Certification Scheme, after ActewAGL’s renewable hydrogen refuelling station.

“The Smart Energy Council is thrilled to be partnering with Yara, one of the world’s leading producers and solution providers of ammonia, fertilizers and mining explosives,” said John Grimes, Chief Executive of the Smart Energy Council.

“Yara’s Pilbara ammonia plant currently represents 5 per cent of the global market for ammonia and Yara is showing real leadership in decarbonising the plant step-by-step.”

“The Zero Carbon Certification Scheme is a certificate of origin scheme for renewable hydrogen, renewable ammonia and renewable metals. It’s an absolutely critical step in building the industries of the future,” said Mr Grimes

“We are very happy to be part of this groundbreaking project in Australia. Certification will be essential to create a market for green ammonia,” said Sammy Van Den Broeck, Vice-President Product and Portfolio, Yara Clean Ammonia.

“The initiative will provide guarantees to our customers in Asia, Australia or Europe that the quantities supplied have been produced according to set standards and will inform the customers about key attributes such as renewable origin and greenhouse gas footprint.

“Certified clean ammonia exports from our Pilbara asset will be a cornerstone in Yara’s global trading ammonia network, providing customers in shipping fuel, power, fertilizer and industrial solutions with a reliable and transparent product,” said Mr Van Den Broeck.

The other initial Founding Partners in the Zero Carbon Certification Scheme are:

The German Energy Agency (dena) and the Australian National University are Advisers and Green Hydrogen Catapult a Partner Initiative for the Zero Carbon Certification Scheme. The Ammonia Energy Association is a global industry association that promotes the responsible use of ammonia in a sustainable energy economy. The Green Hydrogen Catapult is a global coalition of seven leading renewable hydrogen companies seeking to accelerate the scale and production of green hydrogen 50-fold in the next six years. Yara is an active member of both the Ammonia Energy Association and the Green Hydrogen Catapult.
