Breaking News: Smart Energy Council announces first Zero Carbon Certification project and Founding Partners in Zero Carbon Certification Scheme

The Smart Energy Council is very pleased to announce the ActewAGL hydrogen refuelling station in Canberra will be the first project to be certified under our world-leading Zero Carbon Certification Scheme.

ActewAGL’s hydrogen refuelling station is a landmark project – Australia’s first public hydrogen refuelling station.

The Smart Energy Council’s Hydrogen Australia division will certify the claim that the refuelling station is powered by 100% renewable energy and that it is producing zero emissions hydrogen.

It is expected the hydrogen refuelling station will be certified by 30 June 2021.

Founding Partners – Zero Carbon Certification Scheme

The Smart Energy Council and Hydrogen Australia have also announced the initial Founding Partners in the globally significant Zero Carbon Certification Scheme.

The Founding Partners are:

+ Also members of the ACT Renewable Hydrogen Cluster

The German Energy Agency (dena) and Australian National University+ are Advisors to the Zero Carbon Certification Scheme, and the Green Hydrogen Catapult are joining the scheme as a partner initiative.

The Ammonia Energy Association is a global industry association that promotes the responsible use of ammonia in a sustainable energy economy. The Green Hydrogen Catapult is a global coalition of seven leading renewable hydrogen companies seeking to accelerate the scale and production of green hydrogen 50-fold in the next six years.

The Smart Energy Council’s Hydrogen Australia division will coordinate the certification project and has today released a limited request for tender to appoint the certifying agency.

ACT GovThe ACT government is the executive authority of the Australian Capital Territory. Australia’s first public Hydrogen refuelling station, operated by ActewAGL, has opened in Fyshwick, marking a major milestone in the rollout of zero emissions vehicles in the ACT. Government is committed to addressing transport emissions by supporting Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) uptake together with measures to increase uptake of active travel and public transport. The ACT Government will also use this station to service Australia’s first government fleet of hydrogen vehicles, 20 FCVs, as the government continues to transition 100% of its passenger fleet to zero emissions vehicles where fit for purpose.

Ammonia Energy Association logo horizontalThe Ammonia Energy Association, is a non-profit membership organization, and has been promoting the use of ammonia in a sustainable energy economy since 2004. The Ammonia Energy Association is the global agent of collective action for the ammonia energy industry by creating, collecting, organizing, and disseminating relevant knowledge for the responsible use of ammonia in a sustainable energy economy.

ANU logoANU is a world-leading university in Australia’s capital. The Energy Change Institute provides authoritative leadership in energy research, education and public policy. With a broad portfolio ranging from the science and engineering of energy generation and energy efficiency, to energy economics, regulation, security, sociology and policy.
CWP Global logo

CWP was founded in 2007 based on a passion for renewables and the opportunities that a timely entry into the emerging renewable energy market in Southeast Europe  (SEE) presented. After entering Australia in 2008, they successfully developed a 2 GW renewable energy platform, pioneering new business models such as corporate PPAs and non-recourse financing based on value-enhancing part merchant offtake strategies.

CWP Global was formed in late 2020 after a merger between CWP Renewables and the Grassroots Renewable Energy Trust, creating a multi-billion dollar integrated renewables company in partnership with Partners Group. CWP Global is one of the lead developers on the 26GW Asian Renewable Energy Hub project.

Evoenergy is the name used by the electricity poles and wires, and gas pipes business and is part of the ActewAGL Distribution partnership. Evoenergy and the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) have partnered to build a first-of-its-kind hydrogen test facility at CIT’s Fyshwick campus. The facility opened in December 2018, and since then, the facility has been testing how hydrogen interacts with our network materials, work practices and equipment.

Star Scientific STAR Vector Logo CMYK

Star Scientific Limited was founded by Andrew Horvath who is its Global Group Chairman. Early years were spent working to advance muon-catalysed fusion, which led to the tangential development of a unique catalyst which reacted with hydrogen and oxygen to create heat. This became the award-winning HERO – the Hydrogen Energy Release Optimiser, a zero-emissions hydrogen energy and heat solution.
